CE, FCC, RoHS, UL Explained — How to Verify Supplier Certificates

CE (European Union)
CE marking is a self-declaration that a product meets applicable EU directives (LVD, EMC, RoHS, RED for wireless). There is no official CE database — suppliers should provide a signed Declaration of Conformity naming the directives, standards and a responsible EU contact. Red flag: a 'certificate' from an unknown body with no DoC.
FCC (United States)
Electronic devices sold in the US require FCC compliance; anything with a radio (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) needs certification and an FCC ID. This one is fully verifiable: look up the FCC ID in the FCC equipment authorization database and confirm the grantee matches your supplier's legal name.
RoHS (hazardous substances)
RoHS restricts lead, mercury, cadmium and other substances in electronics. It's usually bundled with CE for the EU and mirrored in UK/China versions. Ask for the latest RoHS test report (per material, not a generic pass letter) from an accredited lab like SGS, TÜV or Intertek.
UL vs ETL (North America safety listing)
UL and ETL marks both indicate listing to the same US safety standards (ETL is Intertek's mark, typically faster and cheaper). Either satisfies retailers and insurers; what matters is that the listing is active in the certifier's public database under the exact model number. Unlisted 'UL file numbers' are the classic fake-mark trick.
Five fake-certificate red flags
1) Certificate model numbers that don't match the quoted product. 2) CE 'certificates' issued for a different company name. 3) Scanner-quality PDFs with expired dates. 4) Test reports older than the product revision. 5) Refusal to share the DoC or grant letter 'for confidentiality'. When in doubt, pay an inspection firm $150 to verify — cheaper than one customs seizure.
Check certificates before you pay a deposit
Make certificate verification a pre-deposit checkpoint in every order. Start with verified suppliers, ask for certificate numbers, and verify against the issuer databases above.
